Edwin Van Der Sar has been nominated for the Match of the Day 'Save of the Season' award. The Dutch giant joins the likes of Shay Given, Maik Taylor and David James for the gong, with his point-blank stop at Everton singled out by the BBC.

Edwin Van Der Sar has been nominated by Match of the Day for the 'Save of the Season' award.

The United shot stopper did superbly to stop Tim Cahill finding the net from point-blank range at Goodison Park. The BBC panel will evaluate the Dutchman's stop against saves from Maik Taylor, Shay Given, Paul Robinson, David James, Kelvin Davies, Anti Niemi and Tomasz Kuszczak.

Davies' stop will be remembered by many United fans. The Sunderland 'keeper did superbly well in turning-away Ruud Van Nistelrooy's 15-yard drive as the Black Cats battled for a stalemate at Old Trafford. The result relegated the North East side, but also killed off our own title aspirations.

Van Der Sar has had an excellent first season at Old Trafford and winning this gong could be the icing on the cake for the 34-year-old. Votes can be registered by ringing 09011 11 05 06 or sending 'SAVE A' to 81111. Charges apply. Of course, if you'd rather do it properly and try and match the decision of the BBC's panel, correct entries could be in with a chance of winning four tickets to a Premiership game.
