Vics beaten, now for the Cards

After beating Conference outfit, Northwich, Harriers face another Conference side in Woking in the 2nd round of the FA Cup. 10 years ago Kidder beat Woking in the same round. This time though, Harriers must travel to Kingfield,the scene of the 2000 promotion party.

DEANO DOUBLE BEATS THE VICS (brief report)
Harriers have progressed to the FA Cup 2nd round for the first time in three years with a narrow in over Northwich Victoria. In an even game, Harriers edged through thanks to tow headed goals from Dean Bennett, his first goals of the season.
With Steve Burton not allowed to play and Scott Stamps still out injured, Harriers fielded Sam Shilton at left back. Striker Bo Henriksen returned to the bench alongside Rob Betts who was involved for the first time since Jan’s return. Harriers probably had the better of the 1st half, with Vic’s having to clear one effort off the line. Harriers took the lead through Bennett on 39 minutes, and there was some controversy about it. As Gadsby advance down the right wing, the ball did hit him on the arm, more ball to arm and not arm to ball. The ref allowed play to continue and Bennett met Gadsby’s cross at the far post. This did infuriate the Vic’s players and fans alike. Difficult to say really, we’ll take any luck going at the moment thanks.
Harriers went in 1-0 up at the break and Vic’s really started to get into the game in the 2nd half as Harriers were forced to defend well. Jan then made a few changes, with Bomber Bo coming on for Parish and Rob Betts for Matt Gadsby. Bo looked sharp and was unlucky not to extend Kidder’s lead on a couple of occasions. It was pretty even and it was evident that Kidder needed a 2nd goal. That arrived in the last 10 minutes. Big John Williams, providing a super cross for Bennett to double Harriers lead. That would be that I thought, but Northwich pulled a goal back immediately through Thompson. This set up a tense finish. Vic’s tried in vain to get back into the game and were close on a couple of occasions. Harriers final sub, Matt Lewis, on for John Williams, had a chance to sew up the game late on but he took too long about getting a shot in and his shot was charged down. Harriers tried to keep the ball in the corners and eventually held out for a rare FA Cup victory.
CARDS IN THE CUP
So after beating Northwich, Harriers reward is more Conference opposition in old adversaries Woking. Harriers will travel to Kingfield probably on Saturday 6th December. I say probably as you never know, we might get on telly, but I doubt it, Macclesfield are still in the competition. Not a bad draw really, a difficult one but winnable. In fact I wouldn’t really see it as a shock if we were to lose away at a Conference team. Anytime a half decent Conference team beats an average 3rd division team at home isn’t a shock at all to me. It’s a bit of an upset if its done away from home, or it’s a team at the bottom of the Conference against a 3rd division leader. We’ve met a few times in the Cup before. The 1st occasion was in 90/91, when Woking beat us 2-1 in a 2nd replay. They of course went on to beat Brian Talbot’s West Brom 4-2 in the 3rd round. The next Cup meeting was in our best ever FA Cup season, 93/94. we beat Woking 1-0 at Aggborough in the 2nd round. Of course we then went and beat the Blues 2-1 in the next round. The next big game against Woking was the 95 Trophy final, where we lost 2-1 in extra time. Finally, Woking’s Kingfield was the stadium where we finally clinched the Conference title in April 2000.
More on the Woking fixture later, next up in the league is a trip to Rochdale next Saturday.
