Torquay beat Harriers for the 1st time yesterday on day best remembered in history for Englands rugby world cup win. Will Rugby now threaten soccers domination ? Breif report on Torquay,views& reaction, Worcester friendly info plus news on former Harriers in trouble with the law

HARRIERS 1 TORQUAY 2
So Torquay finally registered their first league win over Kiddy with a deserved 2-1 victory. Harriers made one change from last weeks win at Rochdale, Bo Henriksen returning to the starting line up. Dean Bennett moved back into midfield, with Matt Gadsby dropping to the bench. The Gulls took the lead on 7 minutes, Wills slotting in from inside the area. Harriers drew level through top scorer Danny Williams on 12 minutes. Andy White advanced down the right and cut inside the area before moving away from goal and setting up Danny a treat. Danny boy made no mistake with a precise finish. From then on Harriers should have used the momentum to go on and win the game, they didn’t.
Torquay scored again in the 2nd half through Wills and this proved to be the winner. Harriers didn’t really create much after that and Brocky did make one good save as Torquay held out for a deserved win. Kidder’s only effort of note was a header from skipper Hatswell, which was well saved.
The main event in fairness on the day was England winning the World Cup. I myself have mentioned the fact that Rugger could gain popularity at the expense of football and Saturday saw a big step forward for the oval ball game. This week saw UEFA “bod” Gerard Aigner say that football could learn from Rugby. What he actually said was that footballer could learn. He meant about discipline and respect towards officials. Well Mr Aigner, head of the pathetic UEFA, its YOU who needs to learn, along with those other fools FIFA and to a lesser extent our own FA. The rules now are ungovernable in the current climate. The referees and officials ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Simple, really, get ex players to do it instead of impotent little men intent on making names for themselves. More officials per game are needed, any technology assistance should be used as well because now its getting a joke. Today saw another inept display by the ref, not that bad but they need help badly. He turned down 2 penalty shouts and one was cast iron. In fact, if the same incident had occurred in rugby it would have been a penalty. Obviously he couldn’t have seen Dean Bennett being strangled in mid air. That’s why any video help etc is needed.
I know I’m being a little picky and in fairness it was a fair result. But every week we see these weak little men ruining games across the country. That’s why ex players should be involved more, like they are in rugby. Football has many problems and to me a real big one is its petty rules set up by nonsense organisations like UEFA & FIFA. Rugby is on the rise, and they should be very wary.
WORCESTER CITY TOMORROW
Speaking of rugby, Harriers travel to Worcester City tomorrow (Mon 24/11/03) for a testamonial for Ian Cotterill. Of course City used to be well ahead of Kidder and were a very big non league outfit. Now they are marooned in the Southern League, with Worcester Rugby Club by far and away the biggest sports club in the City, in fact probably the county. So there’s a prime example of rugby triumphing over football (of course Mr Duckworth’s millions have helped mind!).
For those wanting to go, Worcester City play at St Georges Lane, which is just off the Tything(I think) on the Kidder side of Worcester. Basically straight down the A449, into Worcester, keep going until you see a sign on your left before you get into the city centre. Admission is £5 for adults and OAP’S and £1 for kids.
FORMER HARRIERS IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW
According to news reports tonight, Harriers legend and WBA striker is on the run from the police. This follows an incident in Coventry, where Hughes’s car was involved in a fatal accident. Lee apparently left the scene and now the Police are asking for him to contact them.
Of course, Lee is not the only former Harrier to attract Police attention this week. Former keeper Darren Steadman is being prosecuted for fraud. Darren has already got form for fraud offences, maybe when opposition fans sung “dodgy keeper”, they knew something we didn’t.
JAN’S REACTION TO TORQUAY DEFEAT
According to some reports, Jan is looking to sign a “leader”, in light of Harriers 2-1 defeat to Torquay, and it is suggested that “leader” could be a midfielder. One player who has been linked to Harriers at the moment is Richie Appleby. Richie is not really a leader though, plus Jan has commented that the new man is not Appleby. It will be interesting to see who it is as we struggle to get away from the drop zone. In fact, Jan has also be quoted as saying that this season “will be long and hard”. This comment could be used in some Carry on Film way, but until we get going properly, I think I’ll refrain.
