Steve Bruce said: "He has got a knee problem which is degenerative really. It is wear and tear and there is no overnight solution to it.
"It is not as if it is a specific injury like ligament damage or a cartilage. It is a knee problem that has come from playing for many years.
"He is in discomfort and it might be a that we have to manage the problem. We have to look down that route and say that maybe it is not possible for him to play two games in three days or it might not be possible for him to train every day.
"Thankfully at the moment, with the rest and injections Christophe has had, there seems to have been an improvement.
"But for me the acid test will come the week after next when Christophe joins back in with the main group of players on the training ground and he steps things up again."
Dugarry underwent knee surgery in August but it failed to solve the problem and he has not played since the clash with Blackburn on December 6.
