RFU Statement on Premier Rugby

The Rugby Football Union has requested a meeting with the Chairman and Chief Executive of Premier Rugby Ltd next week to discuss yesterday's announcement by PRL, made at the conclusion of the club Chairmen & Shareholders meeting, which included proposed changes to the agreed structured season.

The RFU supports Premier Rugby's plans to bring its cost base into line
with revised revenue projections likely during the recession but it is
concerned at the reported plans to increase the number of Guinness
Premiership matches and the apparent withdrawal by Premier Rugby from the
proposed successor tournament to the EDF Energy Cup.
The RFU will be requesting clarification and further detail on these
reported proposals prior to their presentation to the scheduled
Professional Game Board meeting on January 22. It is important that any
such proposals are in accord with the terms of the new eight year RFU/PRL
agreement signed in October 2007 and which has started well since it took
effect in July 2008.

The RFU weren't really overly concerned about "maintaining the stability of playing structures" when they railroaded the 12-team Championship proposal through, were they?

Totally agree. The RFU should keep their noses out of the GP and concentrate on their own patch.
Generally it would be fair to say that you get a much clearer view of the abilities of a company, manager, rugby player. Anything or anyone operating in a competitive environment really, when things are not going your way.
Its easy when things are running smoothly.
The National side has been badly malfunctioning for close on 6 years now.
The top end of the game is under the control by the RFU yet we have as far as Im aware we have heard not one peep from this organisation about the mess over which they preside or what they are doing about it.
Apart from Rob Andrews pathetic attempt to blame Clive Woodward last year.

Question: 1 so are the GP clubs not members of the RFU then?

The GP Clubs are not revolving around themselves (many fans would prefer that of course) they are part of the Rugby Football Union of Clubs whether you like it or not
The only answer would be to break away

I contend they should expend their energies getting their own house in order.
If they feel the need to interfere with the club scene then maybe they should start with greatly reducing the number of overseas players employed.
And one step up the food chain, dealing with the Saxons issue regarding selection.

for over a hundered years the football league ran the top four divisions whilst all their members were also in the FA, what's wrong with rugby running under similar lines?
I'm not sure more GP games instead of the anglo-welsh cup is actually a good thing, especially as the clubs sunk their own boat by picking cr@p sides in the old Anglo-Welsh.

Theres talk of reducing squad numbers on the one hand and increasing the number of games on the other.
Either way its the players who get shafted.
What happened to all that talk of player burnout? And that all started before the playoffs were introduced...

This continous war between the Prem owners and the RFU has become hugely detrimental to Rugby.
I have most reluctantly come to the view that this circle cannot be squared and that the Prem Owners/Clubs should be disaffiliated from the RFU.
