England take on the might of the Barbarians prior to their Summer Tour of New Zealand/Australia and the Saxons Challenge in the USA. This match is not a test match so no caps will be given but it will still mean a great deal to those who pull on the white shirt of England and those who are invited to play for the Baa Baas.
None more so than for England's No 8, Nick Easter who has been give the honour of Captain for this match, as Lewis Moody is otherwise engaged trying to win the Guinness Premiership Championship with Leicester Tigers. Having said that, I am sure the Saracens will be pulling out all the stops to ensure that does not happen.
When asked about the Captaincy England Team Manager Martin Johnson commented "Nick will be captain on Sunday and Lewis Moody will captain the tour party to Australia,"
Auckland born Shontayne Hape will make his England debut at 12 and is one of three uncapped players in the starting XV, along with Gloucester lock Dave Attwood and Newcastle Falcons prop Jon Golding. Paul Doran-Jones makes his first appearance in England colours since his debut against Argentina last November. A further uncapped player on the bench is London Wasps scrum half Joe Simpson.
Charlie Hodgson has been given another chance to master the No 10 shirt and we wish him well and hope the crowd does not get on his back but shows support and cheers him on along with the rest of the team.
Johnson commenting on the side said:- "We have picked a strong team for Sunday. The Leicester boys play on Saturday but some guys haven’t played since May 8 and some guys have had a long season - (Northampton winger) Chris Ashton has probably played the most games so it was simple to leave him out this week."
"It is exciting to see Jon Golding playing for England, same as Dave Attwood at four and Shontayne who was around our squad in the Six Nations but didn't get a chance, for whatever reason."
"Dave Strettle is a guy who has been around the squad but he got injured then ill so he couldn't tour last year. It is good to see him back."
Xavier Rush has been named captain of a multi-national Barbarians' team. The number 8 leads a starting line-up featuring players from eight countries and is joined in the back-row by fellow All Black Rodney So'oialo and Cardiff Blues' club-mate Martyn Williams. The side also includes three English internationals Paul Sackey, Julian White and Ben Kay. A tradition of the Barbarians is that all players will wear the Barbarians shirt but wear their club socks.
So it is evens on the Captains at No8
each way!
