England Team Manager Martin Johnson was showing his support for the England Women’s World Cup squad yesterday (Thursday) when he visited the team at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, the venue of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2010 (WRWC).

As a world cup winner himself in 2003, the former England captain passed on his support and invaluable advice to the 26-women squad as well as watched them in training at the tournament pool game venue.

Johnson said: “I’m really impressed with what I have seen. The players look in great shape and are clearly raring to go.

“As a former player, a team manager and someone who has experienced a world cup before, I know what the squad are going through and what is still to come for them.  There will be some very challenging times ahead but I am sure this squad will be the best prepared they can be to contest the world cup. Johnsons backing is something the women can do without.

Next he`ll be telling them how to play.

They are about to embark on a World cup campaign, as favourites... I'm sure the girls hated every minute of Johnson's visit and were thinking throughout... "Forget Johnno, I wish we were getting a talk from whingebasher, that delightful witty and knowledgeable chap who knows about international rugby inside out."

Speaking of someone who knows international rugby inside out...

A few weeks back you posted that all an international side needs is a good scrum and lineout and a good kicking game. Anything else is a bonus.

So whats your view on the two Tri Nations tests so far in New Zealand and do you think Graham Henry would agree with your philosophy. Or Robbie Deans for that matter?

You're talking boll.cks as usual. This is what I wrote:

Quote:
You don't win consecutive high pressure world cup knockout matches with "flair" (the latter gets you dumped out by the likes of Fiji or France). Every world cup has told us that. A big pack, very good setpiece and defense and fly halves who can control territory. Anything else is a bonus in those kinds of pressure matches.

As you can see that's a little different to what you wrote, and I stand by my opinion. I have no interest in derailing the point of the original post with mind-numbing confrontations with you. Otherwise I would have gone back to the three dozen times you've been proved wrong in the past, before conveniently ignoring it.

My point was, I would think the womens team may have quite enjoyed hearing from a world cup winning camptain, who knew what it was like going into a tournament as favourites.

Thats close enough for me.

Amazed you could actually find that amongst your great sea of waffle to be honest. Well done!

Anyway, again, do you think Graham Henry, whilst the Tri Nations Tests, were not `consecutive World Cup Knockout matches` would agree that the AB`s played with no flair. And that their victory was solely down to a big pack, good setpiece, defense, and a fly half who could control territory?

Answer on the back of a postage stamp please.

Also, by the way, whats being being favourites got to do with anything? Thats just a nonsense that journalists cough up when they cant think of anything else to ask a player. Im sure the girls couldnt give a stuff about that.

eye rolling smiley

If it's close enough for you, then you know b.gger all, but then we already knew that. High pressure, world cup knockout matches aren't about 'flair', you don't win consecutive rounds at the world cup with 'flair'. At least that's not what history has shown us. That was my point. Stop trying to twist my words after you've been proved wrong for the 37th time.

History and indeed common sense has also told us that favourites have added pressure on their backs to perform on the big stage, whereas an underdog mentality can get teams far. Johnson and England went into 2003 as favourites for the world cup, along with perhaps NZ, and whilst they weren't at their best, they still found a way to win each game. The bottom line is I'm sure Johnson had some good insight to give the ladies, which is the point of the original post.

You ignore my comments I don't see why I shouldn't ignore your pointless badly-argued paragraphs that say very little.

NZ played well in most facets of the game, showing amongst other things power, pace and precision behind the scrum. What's your point? Once again, my point was in regards to doing well at world cups, in particular, the latter stages. Keep digging yourself deeper, it's fun to watch.

Why dont you just answer the question? Its not that hard.

What in heaven's name has your usual sniping match got to do with the Women's World Cup? Why don't you keep your comments to a relevant thread.
FWIW, I hear the Women's training squad were very pleased to see Johnno supporting their bid to become world champions.
A bit of support from this board would help too!

Ignore the comments relating to world cup knockout matches, and dealing with the pressure of being favourites. I'm sure GH was pleased with his side's pace, power and precision behind the scrum and agree that his side displayed more than the basics.

You twist people's arguments around, you ignore when you're proved wrong time and time again, you never admit to being wrong, you make up lies, and you criticise things you know nothing about. You're a total idiot, not worth my or anyone's time. It's a big laugh reading your posts though

EDIT: Sorry St_Bart, can't help it, will try to refrain in the future.

Well the women are certainly diplomatic.

Im going to some of the games. Bums on seats is what they need.

Im not sure players will really get much encouragement from reading stuff on here.

I did in my last post, you dull ***k. It was a pathetic pointless question coming from a pathetic pointless man. I say man, but perhaps hypocritical child is more appropriate.

I say again, I already did you dull and now blind ***k.

Good for Henry and the all blacks.

I have to say that I think St. Bart has made the most salient point. I'm sure the players involved would appreciate the comments and insight from a person who has "been there and done it" and, as with any player in such a position, each would have gained something from it.

I'm sure I don't need to remind anybody that I am often a critic of Johnno on this board, but happy to give credit where it's due, too!

St Bart has made the only point to be honest. The rest was just a wind up and a reaction.

But Tigeroo still hasnt answered the question...
