England Rugby June 2016 - In Review NEWS June marked the celebrations of volunteering which ran from June 1-12 and highlighted the outstanding work of volunteers across the length and breadth of the UK. In rugby, volunteers really are the heartbeat of the game, with many thousands across the country giving their time, energy and enthusiasm to grow our sport. With around 40 roles up being filled up and down the country, there are a wealth of different ways for volunteers to get involved, helping to grow the game and support rugby in their community. Bill Beaumont, Chairman of England Rugby, said “For any team to run out onto the pitch and any rugby club to open its doors, there is a team of selfless volunteers working away, giving up their evenings and weekends so that others can play. Volunteers really are one of our most valuable assets, whether they are flipping burgers, marking out pitches, arranging fixtures or coaching the youngsters. Volunteers, young and old, really are the lifeblood of our game.” The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced new appointments to the RFU Council for the 2016/17 season, following the RFU’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). From 1 August 2016, Peter Baines, RFU Senior Vice President will become the President of the RFU, Former England rugby Captain, Maggie Alphonsi MBE will join the RFU Council and Former England Rugby full back, Jonathan Webb will join Ian Ritchie as the RFU’s two representatives on the World Rugby Council. Webb replaces Bill Beaumont CBE who will take office as Chairman of World Rugby on 1 July.
