Palace defender Powell set for Medical

Crystal Palace centre back Darren Powell will have a medical at the Madejski Stadium tomorrow after the 2 clubs agreed a fee in the region of £125,000.Powell has been tracked by Steve Coppell for a number of weeks now.

Darren Powell will have a medical at the Madejski Stadium tomorrow and should he pass the medical, he’ll sign on the dotted line early next week

The probable signing of Darren Powell will hopefully put an end to the Royals defensive problems. The Royals are short in cover in the full back positions and Powell will cover those positions.

Injuries have tampered the seasons of Adie Williams and Steve Brown, while Ivar Ingimarrson has a tough start but now looks settled.

At the moment Greame Murty is out injured with a twisted knee sustained in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United and Steve Brown is still struggling after his swollen knee injury. Adie Williams is short of match fitness while Nicky Shorey has had a disappointing season by his standards.

Powell is well known to Steve Coppell, having played under him at Brentford in the 2001/2002 before being sold on transfer deadline day to Palace for a fee of £400,000.Powell has made a good impact at the Eagles, but is currently 4th choice defender behind Kit Symons, Tony Popovic and recent signing Mikele Leigertwood.

Powell is a defender who is good in the air and reads the game very well, and is regarded by many Palace fans as the best centre back at the club.

A move now looks likely as the Royals bid for a place in the Premiership.
