Oxford midfielder linked with Reading

Oxford United Midfielder Dean Whitehead has been linked with a free transfer move to Reading.The 22 year old is out of contract this summer,but should Steve Coppell sign him a fee will need to be agreed.A number of 1st Division clubs are suppose to be interested as well.

Steve Coppell could be set to strengthen his midfield with summer with the arrival of 22 year old Oxford United midfielder Dean Whitehead according to This is United (www.thisisunited.com)

The out of contract midfielder has been linked with the Royals,but they'll have to beat off competition from Sheffield United,Watford,Bournemouth,Wycombe,Nottingham Forest and Sunderland.

Oxford born Whitehead was the U's player of the season last season.Speaking on the matter,Manager Graham Rix said;

"We've made him a great offer.

"He's a key player to me and, fair play to the chairman, he has backed me in pulling out all the stops to try and keep him."

Should Whitehead sign,he would face a battle for the center midfield spot along with James Harper.
