Reading and Portsmouth agree fee for Ashdown

Reading and Portsmouth have struck up a deal over the transfer of Jamie Ashdown to Fratton Park meaning their will be no tribunal.

Initial talks over the summer over the fee had broken down after Ashdown had decided on a move to the Premiership. Reading were looking for a fee in the region of £300,000 upfront which Portsmouth officials were unwilling to agree to.

Therefore a tribunal had been set for 23rd September although now a deal has been struck up which suits both parties. Although the actual sum will remain undisclosed.

Manager Steve Coppell will be hoping to be given the money to strengthen his squad if need although at present The Royals lie second behind Wigan Athletic after a convincing 3:1 win at home to Gillingham on Saturday.

Ashdown is likely to make his first competitive start for Portsmouth in their Carling Cup match in midweek against Tranmere Rovers.

Sad news has reached us of the passing of a true great, Brian Clough OBE. Clough passed away in Derby City General Hospital aged 69.

A hospital spokesman confirmed the cause of death was stomach cancer.
