GARETH BREAR turned out for the Steele-Bodger's XV last week in the traditional pre-Varsity-Match game against Cambridge University.

The Steele-Bodger's XV are a Barbarian side that turn out an invitational team annually for this fixture against the Light Blues as a preparation for the Varsity Match.

The team is named after Micky Steele-Bodger who played for England in the 1960's and was president of the baa-baas for a number of years.

In a whirlwind game, the final score was Cambridge University 40 Steele-Bodger's XV 41.

The team was coached and captained by Australian International Pat Howard, now coaching at Leicester. Also starting for the Steele-Bodger's XV were former Rotherham favourites Russell Earnshaw - now with Doncaster - and Stuart Moffatt, who has played International rugby for Scotland and plays with Borders. Both Russell and Stuart represented their University in the annual Varsity Match a few years ago.

All three scored tries - one each - and it is understand that Gareth showed off his step and pace in a distinguished performance on the wing (that's according to his Dad).
