York join the three-horse promotion race

York City's recent good form in the Blue Square Premier has seen them join the race for automatic promotion. With City thankful for the poor form of Grimsby and Darlington, we're already realistically looking at next season, so we are going to take a look at the race of Blue Square clubs aiming for promotion.

 

When John Schofield was sacked, Martin Foyle declared his interest in the City job following his departure from Port Vale, City didn't respond with the same interest in Foyle and the job eventually went to Peter Jackson. Now Foyle could easily find himself visiting Sincil Bank as a manager next season after guiding York from midtable also-rans into the form team in the Blue Square Premier. They recently recorded 10 straight League wins before a 1-1 draw with Histon, however, they returned to winning ways quickly by defeating Kettering Town on Saturday.

It's a far cry from the season that saw York go out of the League. The Minstermen were top in 2003/4 after winning their first four games, but a 3-0 defeat at Sincil Bank changed everything and they only won six more games all season, finishing last.

They have now caught up to both Stevenage and Oxford, three now separated by just a point, although Oxford will still be favourites due to having two games in hand over their promotion rivals. The group are nine points clear of the other teams chasing the Playoffs and it's hard to predict just who will join the Playoff party with two of the aforementioned teams.

Despite having the most points out of anyone else, Mansfield Town's inconsistent form, mixed with the fact they've played up to four more games than some of the teams that are just a point behind them. Wimbledon, Rushden and Luton all share 49 points with Kettering a point further back. It is unlikely anyone else will crash into that little group.

York, Mansfield and Stevenage would all be easy to get to.
Stevenage had two sent off I think yesterday?

For the derby it would have to be Mansfield, but for sentimentality you'd have to look at Stevenage given that they've missed out on god knows how many occasions.

Ive spent far too many miserable afternoons watching City at Field Mill to want them back in the league.

As good away trips go, itd be nice to have York back again.
