Legends beat Keith Alexander XI

The Legends won the Keith Alexander Testimonial Match on penalties after 4-4 scoreline. The Keith Alexander XI strolled into a 3-0 lead before 4 second half goals seemingly secured victory for the legends, then Jamie Forrester equalised with seconds to go. The Legends won the penalty shoot out 4-3.

A crowd of 3,541, higher than some of our League games this season, made the trip down to Sincil Bank on bank holiday Monday to see the nostalgic team of the 2002-2006 era vs a team consisting of some of the biggest names in Premiership and England history.

Simon Yeo opened the scoring with a half volley before Leon Mettam managed what he never managed before, scored a goal at Sincil Bank, he had headed in a cross that should have been dealt with better by the keeper. Mettam set up the third for Martin Carruthers. All this before the hour mark.

It was at this point that Alan Marriott had been replaced by Ben Sedgemore in goal and the midfielder started conceding for fun. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hammered home before Steve Hodge scored twice and Brian Deane volleyed home with five minutes to go. Then again, it would have helped it the Legends only had 11 men on the pitch instead of the 13 they were playing with.

Mayo was fouled in the final minute and Paul Alexander, son of Keith, stepped up a penalty that had five people on the line, it was cleared but Jamie Forrester smashed home.

A penalty shoot-out resulted in a 4-3 win for the Legends Team.

Does anyone know why the lads from Peterborough didn't turn up - I thought Frecko, McClean, Mackail-Smith and Boyd were supposed to be playing too???

Otherwise a pleasant if slightly surreal afternoon at the Bank - and a great way to remember Big Keith!!!

Frecklington was there but couldnt play due to injury, not sure about the others

Mark Tyler was in the Playoffs for Luton so couldn't play.

I'm guessing the Peterborough ones were because they were away at Plymouth yesterday and might not have travelled back until today.

Good Luck, Mr Gorsky

Shame the posh boys didnt turn up.
Thought Mccombe was coming I know he's injured but a shame none the less.
Great to see so many former Imps and the legends turn our for the great man.
Was great loved it
So many memories watching the former players.

Here we go again!
Will we ever get the right man?

I think that team that started the game for the City XI would still be good enough at this level to challenge for promotion.....although it did seem strange to see a side represented by Keith's former players playing football.

Was funny as well when Dion Dublin was announced as the final penalty taker.
It was Brian Deane! (Sm100)

Made the journey to Sincil Bank for this one. Pleased I went and enjoyed the game - Carruthers was significantly better than I remember him. The image of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink missing the ball and landing on his @#$%& will live long in the memory. smiling smiley
