Brilliant and catastrophic, it's Burton Albion

Burton Albion were involved in games that produced a total of 142 goals last season and yet still ended up with a goal difference of 0. They're a team capable of brilliance and complete disaster, making them one of the most awkward teams to predict.

Despite beating us twice last season, I like Burton Albion. Unlike some of the previous Conference Champions,  they didn't come into the division claiming that they would walk through the division and bring up examples such as Yeovil, Carlisle and Exeter who made the step up to the next division within a year or two of promotion. There wasn't a point last season where Burton went around claiming to be far better than they were and probably most of all, I like Burton because they relegated Grimsby Town.

Burton entered the division last season after winning the Conference, although they won the division on the back of a run of just four wins in their last fourteen games, surrounding a near 20 point lead along the way to only then win the title on the final day due to results elsewhere. Infact, it's been a long time since the Conference was won on the final day and that, combined with the poor run of form towards the end of the season, meant that Burton were one of the favourites to go down.

However, Burton just went about their business last season and comfortably survived their first season in the Football League. With a whopping 142 goals being scored in games involving Burton, they were one of the most exciting teams in the division. No team outside of the top four scored more goals, whereas only three teams conceded fewer goals than they did. It was simply extraordinary.

You only have to look at some of their results from last season to see just how exciting (and I imagine frustrating for Burton fans) to watch. Scorelines they were involved in (in chronological order) were 1-5, 5-2, 3-2, 1-5, 2-5, 3-2, 3-2, 6-1, 1-4, 3-2, 2-3, 4-3, 5-6, 0-3 and 3-0, it was just incredibly. However, they showed serious signs of inconsistency. The 6-1 win and the 1-4 defeat were both at home and followed each other.

How could I also put a preview on here without mentioning the 5-6 defeat to Cheltenham Town. In what was an incredible match that had seen Burton's Steve Kabba make it 5-3 with five minutes to go. Many Cheltenham fans left the ground and missed Michael Pook making it 5-4 before Richards equalised the game in the 90th minute. More was to come though as Pook made it 6-5 to Cheltenham in the 94th minute, the only time during the match they took the lead.

Paul Peschisolido may have an established an exciting team, but they could technically be considered to not be success as they won less games than they lost. However, 13^th place and 62 points is a highly respectable finish for their first ever season at this level.

Guy Branston has left the Pirelli Stadium to go back to Torquay, whom he played for on loan last season.  Incoming have been Garyn Preen, James Ellison, Lewis Young, Nathan Stanton, Adam Bolder and Adam Legzdins.

Vitally Burton have also managed to keep hold of ex-Imp Greg Pearson. Pearson was on loan at Sincil Bank in 2004 but failed to do enough to earn a permanent deal to take him from West Ham. In the last two seasons for Burton he has played 82 League games and scored 32 goals, not a bad record at all. He is showing all the signs of the potential that City fans were promised when he arrived from West Ham for City. Still on 25, Pearson has a good future ahead of him.

Because of their inconsistency and the equal ability to score and concede on a regular basis makes them hard to predict. If there's one team I think will prove to be dark horses then it is Burton. I think realistically they're looking at a safe midtable position.
