A Year in Review : April 2010

City entered April unbeaten in six, but a poor month meant that the Imps were back in danger of relegation and it took the goals of Davide Somma to secure League status for the Imps, a status that was secured with a win over Bury.

With the season coming to an end, City had appeared to be timing an unbeaten run very well, being unbeaten in six before a visit to Cheltenham Town. However, City struggled to create chances against their relegation rivals and it came as little surprise the only realistic chance of goal saw a winner, it came for Cheltenham’s Julian Alsop.

It didn’t get better for the Imps two days later as Morecambe visited Sincil Bank on Bank Holiday Monday. City played pretty poorly as Morecambe took a comfortable lead through Stanley, Hughton did equalise but goals from Mullin and Curtis for the visitors secured a 3-1 win that was well earned by the visitors.

Other than matches there wasn’t a lot happening at Sincil Bank and the next action came as high-flying Bournemouth came to Sincil Bank. A tight game came to life towards the end of the first half when Davide Somma scored a reasonable goal under pressure. Brett Pitman equalised for Bournemouth but it was Somma who made the pivotal contribution yet again, this time hitting a brilliant half volley over the goalkeeper and on the under-side of the bar to go in.

From one eventually promoted side to another, the Imps made the trip to eventual Champions Notts County on a Tuesday night for one of the most memorable night matches in recent years, but it still resulted in a City defeat. Hughes opened the scoring due to a Burch mistake in the first minute but the Imps equalised three minutes later. Moses Swaibu and a Notts County midfielder both went in with feet raised in a challenge, but despite getting broken ribs, Swaibu was the only one to see a card and it was red.

Chris Herd’s season was also over after a first half injury before Davide Somma almost scored from 30 yards, however, goals from Edwards and Facey secured the win for Notts County. City’s poor form continued as Shrewsbury got their first home win over Lincoln in nine years thanks to an 83^rd minute Kris Bright goal.

Injury prone defender Paul Green was confirmed as out for the season following an injury in training but the conclusion to another poor season was finally settled on April 24^th. The Imps secured a win over Bury thanks to Davide Somma, a win that secured Football League status for the Imps.

The month ended with Michael Gordon being released.
