Howe gives Rovers a chance, Drewe helps extend AFC lead

The bottom of League One and the top of the Blue Square Premier Division may not have changed much over the weekend, but there were two big results in both divisions, as well as one of the most surprising results of the season for Wrexham.

Ex-Imp Rene Howe (left) scored the only goal of the game as Bristol Rovers secured a rare win to move off of the bottom of the table and to within three points of safety. The win came over manager Dave Penney's former side Oldham, a sweet victory for Penney after being sacked by the Lancashire side in May.

Dagenham went bottom without even playing and are five points from safety but do have up to four games in hand on some of those above them. Walsall lost 2-0 at Colchester and Swindon lost 1-0 at home to Carlisle to complete the bottom four. Not a lot of the teams at the bottom were in action though so everyone missed a good chance to catch up on the sides above them.

Yeovil, Plymouth, Notts County, Brentford and Sheffield Wednesday are all within five points of the drop zone, however all have games in hand on those in the drop zone and the teams that have been in the FA Cup have plenty of games in hand, Notts for example have five games in hand over Swindon and Walsall and are four and five points ahead of both respectively. You have to say that other than maybe Walsall, who have been in fine form recently, the bottom four will more than likely stay the same for the rest of the season.

There are eight games in League One on Tuesday evening, but none of the relegation candidates have easy fixtures. Plymouth travel to table topping Brighton, Sheffield Wednesday travel to second placed Bournemouth and Dagenham host third placed Huddersfield. Brentford face in form Tranmere.

Lincoln striker Drewe Broughton scored a debut goal for AFC Wimbledon that turned out to be the winning goal, making it 3-2 in a 5-2 to extend AFC Wimbledon's lead at the top to six, although Crawley do now have five games in hand on their local rivals. Luton faced Newport on Friday night in a 1-1 draw to continue the Welsh team's poor form since losing Dean Holdsworth to Aldershot.

In a day where one non-league club were hoping for a big upset away from home, arguably the big upset in the English leagues saw midtable Gateshead win a whopping 7-2 at high-flying and in-form Wrexham. Shaw scored a hatrick for Gateshead who found themselves 5-1 up at half time. Promotion rivals Fleetwood had a more relatively comfortable 3-0 win over Grimsby Town.

Kidderminster Harriers won 2-1 at Cambridge on Friday night to maintain pressure on the top five. Cambridge thought they had got a point after a 91st minute equaliser, but Matt scored a goal three minutes into added on time to secure the three points. The Harriers are now the only team with a realistic chance of forcing their way into the Playoffs, although Fleetwood in the last Playoff place have played more games than anyone in the division and have played four games more than some of the teams below them.

Also, the Blue Square Premier has announced that all of the matches on the final day of the season will kick off at 5:15 to help with TV coverage.
