Imps take Daryl Clare on trial

Lincoln City have taken prolific Blue Square Premier striker Daryl Clare on trial. Although his goals have dried up in recent years, he had a record of better than a goal every other game for some clubs at this level.
Clare came close to joining Lincoln City in 2001 from Grimsby, when Alan Buckley was exceedingly keen on the young striker. Clare rejected the chance eventually though and eventually joined Boston United.
He has been prolific for non-league clubs 25 times in 47 times for Boston (some in the League), 48 goals in 62 games for Chester (again, some in the league), 11 in 25 for Crawley, 37 in 88 for Burton, 5 in 12 for Rushden and 5 in 19 for Gateshead. Not too shabby.
Whether his signature would be popular amongst City fans is another matter though. In 2002 he was at Boston as they beat Lincoln 2-0 at York Street, the Pilgrims' first win in the Football League. He scored the second goal that day and constantly goaded City fans.
Speaking to Cambridge First, Cambridge manager Jez George said “Daryl Clare will train with Lincoln on Wednesday, he lives up that way so it’s a club that’s convenient for him. He’s not in the plans here, and I think they just want to have a look at him and assess his fitness.”
