Imps continue to have consistency issues after Wrexham loss

Lincoln City yet again failed to record back to back victories after a defeat to league leaders Wrexham. The Imps had dominated the opening stages of the game before the first attack from the hosts changed the game, after which the Imps never looked like getting anything from the game.

Alan Power hit a cross just over the bar with the game’s first attack but a through-ball from Nicolau saw Smith one-on-one with Mayebi in the Wrexham goal,  the in-form striker had all the time in the world but could only hit his shot wide of the target. It was a promising start by the Imps with several corners being won and Conal Platt hitting a shot just wide.

Nicolau and Nutter combined passed between themselves before the latter forced a corner, a corner that was then saved by Mayebi. City had dominated the opening ten minutes before the turning point as Conal Platt tried stupidly to score from near the half-way line, Mayebi easily caught it and it landed to Nicolau. He played a poor pass straight to Pogba and he drilled in from the edge of the area from Wrexham’s first attack of the game……how many times have I had to type that down the years?

Nutter hit a free kick well over the bar before Hinds got in the way of a Morrell Volley and had to have treatment for several minutes. Harris hit the bar from 25 yards before Ashton and O’Keefe both quickly got yellow cards. Just before O’Keefe had gotten booked Smith went down injured and would require treatment that would eventually see him leave the game, being replaced by Francis Laurent.

Creighton was booked for a challenge on Nicolau before Perry went down holding his head following a 50/50 challenge, that despite not actually being touched anywhere near his head.

O’Keefe hit a shot wide from 2 5yards to end the half.

City won a corner within seconds of the restart but in typical Lincoln style it came to nothing. Pogba had a shot blocked by Hinds from six yards.

The game was plodding along with neither side really looking like getting the game’s second goal before a controversial moment saw a cross fired against Nelson. The linesman had given a corner but the referee pointed to the spot for handball, that despite the linesman having a clear view and the referee’s view being impeded. Nutter got booked during the protests. Pogba tucked the ball into the net.

Medley came on for his debut for the Imps, replacing Nicolau. Harris was played one-on-one with Farman but much like Smith, he could only fire his effort wide of the target. Morrell had a shot saved by Farman.

Neither side could find the game’s third goal and City’s run without back to back wins continues to stretch back to February.
