Season 2008-9 Revisited .... Again

Part 2 - A fairly enjoyable bit: October and November.

OCTOBER: One win, two defeats, two draws.

Coventry City hammer Southampton 4-1 at the Arena in front of the Sky TV cameras. There's embarrassment for Elliott Ward though as his contender for 'Worst Penalty Ever' is witnessed by a bigger audience than normal (Well, I presume somebody was watching it on TV?!). While some found it humourous, Chris Coleman said: 'I can honestly say there was nothing I found funny about [it]'. Victory means Coventry achieve the 15 points from 10 games target set by manager Chris Coleman, and, having dropped to 18th thanks to the afternoon's results, they shoot back up to 6th place. Wolves are victors in the big Midlands derby thanks to a goal that should never have counted, with Chris Coleman bemoaning Ebanks-Blake's offside winner (The fact that Iwelumo scored a goal that should have stood is irrelevant!). Coleman is also unhappy with Coventry City's 'lack of a killer instinct' - join the club, Chris! Burnley join the list of clubs to leave the Arena with all three points (Despite Coventry City taking the lead), but Derby don't, thanks to a late Clinton Morrison goal. The equaliser is welcomed by CM, who describes his recent drought as '[the] worst stretch in my career without finding the target'. Southampton are also pegged to 1-1 despite a poor Coventry display at St. Mary's, thanks (Again!) to Clinton Morrison, while Elliott Ward is lucky to stay on the pitch after up-ending McGoldrick (Gunnarsson finally put the ball in the net during this fixture, but was incorrectly adjudged to be offside).

NOVEMBER: Two wins, two defeats, one draw.

A superb 1-0 win away at Birmingham City (Morrison again!) in front of the TV cameras is followed by a dismal home display - and defeat - to Crystal Palace, with Chris Coleman describing the display versus Palace as 'garbage, lacklustre, arrogant, blase'. In the Blues match, the home side thought they had equalised when Westwood clawed a Queudrue effort off the line. But with TV cameras unable to prove one way or the other, and boss Alex McLeish big enough to admit he was unsure, Karren Brady, in her 'Sun' column - usually complete with jokes so old Stan Boardman wouldn't use them - became the only person in the country able to see it was a clear goal. Defeat at home to Palace is followed by another home defeat, this time to Plymouth, though manager Chris Coleman is pleased that 'the lads turned up this week'. The decent away form continues though as another Morrison goal gives a Jay Tabb-less Coventry a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. Swansea come to the Arena and continue Coventry's win-less run in front of their own supporters, though the home side do take their first home point of the month (One from nine), with Morrison also having two goals disallowed. Said fixture sees Stephen Wright once again go off injured, as does his replacement Isaac Osbourne (A mere 13 minutes later!). November also sees the death of former Coventry defender Regis Genaux, at the ridiculously young age of 35 - R.I.P youngster.
