Today saw the first ever visit to a football match for my daughters, with the youngest opting to try and sleep before a ball had been kicked, with the other getting into the spirit of things, though even at her tender age, recognising the lack of tactical nous from our beloved manager. That said, a win is a win, and Coventry City finally made the top half of the table.
If the 'score early then sit back' tactics against a QPR team in free-fall wasn't bad enough, the display from referee Mr. Foster was all the ammunition those calling for more female referees needed to justify their ramblings - he was garbage. The man might have tried to referee the game with a smile on his face, but his brains were firmly up his backside.
He missed blatant hand-balls by QPR players, time after time; he ignored blatant fouls by QPR players, time after time; he failed to book QPR players for cynical fouls, time after time; and he even missed the odd QPR foul throw. He also failed to recognise the QPR defence getting into the spirit of Valentine's Day early, as they insisted on hugging Clinton Morrison every time the ball went near him. It was so obvious it was embarrassing, but the visually challenged muppet in black could not see from a matter of yards away what the rest of the ground could see from dozens of yards away....
Three QPR players did finally make it into the referees note-book, with a booking for a cynical foul on McIndoe on 65 minutes, though one QPR players attempts to slice Clingan in half not only went unpunished as far as waving cards was concerned, but did not even result in a free-kick. The reaction from the Coventry City bench, who all charged to the sidelines on mass, would suggest this was yet another garbage decision.
The away side did (According to official stat's) see far more of the ball, but did very little with it, giving the skateboard full of their supporters in the Jewson Stand little to cheer (So few that, despite a bit of recent history between the two sets of supporters, no police were on duty). The one exception was as good a save as you'll see anywhere all season, from Kieran Westwood, denying QPR an undeserved equaliser. Their supporters were already celebrating as KW somehow kept the ball out of the Coventry City net!
For the home side, Carl Baker was criminally under-used, though did go on a couple of quality runs, impressing with his 'magic feet', while Gary Deegan, as well as scoring the games only goal, put in a few crunching challenges, and showed one or two quality touches too (Aron Gunnarsson was not missed!). As usual, Richard Wood was a class act at the back, while even Michael McIndoe went one one quality run, before being crowded out by QPRs defence.
Wright's speculative 40-yard effort on 78 minutes never quite looked like extending the lead, though Freddie Eastwood should have wrapped the game up in injury time after being set up by new loan signing Freddie Sears. Eastwood's effort hit the side netting, without troubling Ikeme in the QPR goal. QPR could, and probably should, have scored seconds before, with one effort fizzing across Westwood's goal-mouth, and thankfully missing everybody in a red shirt.

How many of them enjoyed the experience and want to come back?
Must of been a nightmare looking after all of them, but keep it up - they'll probably hate you for it in the future but after a couple of seasons with your clan going up we'll be the richest club in the world!
Fair report of the game, but I'll take winning and not playing well, although as you say I'm never sure if this is due to instructions from the bench not really letting them.
It did highlight that despite entering the top ten we're not yet a top ten team, as we had to soak up a lot of pressure from a side clearly low on confidence. You'd have hoped we'd have tried to press home the advantage at some stage as they looked clueless despite having a lot of the ball but I guess under Coleman that's never likely to happen. Shame as a exciting performance to go with the decent recent results may just start whetting people's appetites again.
