Kieran Westwood Update....

Like most things Coventry City, there a touch of deja vu about this article, as it's much the same as the Marlon King article posted on here yesterday - only the name has changed....

The story so far: a while ago, Kieran Westwood wanted to sign a new contract with Coventry City, but his agents (Etc) weren't so keen (According to those that claim to know such things). The supporters were happy that KW was saying the right things. Having taken over at Coventry City, Aidy Boothroyd stated he was confident Kieran Westwood would sign a new contract with the club. The supporters were still happy. Then, more recently, Kieran Westwood said he didn't want to sign a new contract, but his agents (Etc) wanted him to (Also according to those that claim to know such things). Supporters were not so happy.

In a recent interview, it seems Kieran Westwood wanted a new contract when he still had two years left, and threw his dummy out the pram because the club waited till he only had twelve months left to run. In some cases, wanting security maked this understandable - in KW's case, this wasn't necessary, as if he were to become a free agent, dozens of clubs would be after his signature. With that in mind, the club got it right. As I've said before, why do players (In most cases) get new contracts when they have a few decent games, yet not get them re-negotiated back down again when they're had a poor run of form?

Westwood claims he 'will not be bullied', but, he also probably won't be selected by Aidy Boothroyd either, so everybody (With the exception of Iain Turner) is the loser: Westwood, because he's not in the shop window; the club, as he cannot boost his potential transfer fee from the bench; and the supporters because a top quality keeper is not being selected.

My advice to Mr. Westwood would be to sign the contract, with the obligatory 'you can sod off if you want to when the right offer comes in' line included (Especially as most contracts aren't worth the paper they're written on anymore), and stay at Coventry City where you're appreciated - before you're suddenly not appreciated anymore.
