What Does The Future Hold? : Part 2

Anyway, now that’s the apocalyptic scenario out of the way, what else might be in store?

The most obvious and beneficial answer for both SISU and Coventry City is to find a new owner. Rumour has it that SISU have wanted the club off their books for some time now but no-one has come forward to take it off their hands. This wouldn’t be particularly surprising if it were true, given the lack of takers the last time the Sky Blues were on the market, and the oil-rich Russians and Arabs treating cash like confetti and upping the ante for everyone. 

BUT… after reading a few things on a few fansites and forums, there is a (fairly weak) link towards a potential new owner. 

One of the new directors of CCFC, Leonard Brody, set up a company called NowDigital in 2005, which was later sold to the Anschutz Company. He is currently head of Clarity Digital, which is another Anschutz owned company. 

One of our former directors, Nathan Kosky, is now a prominent figure in the Global Partnerships and Business Development division of AEG. Which stands for Anschutz Entertainment Group. Unsurprisingly that too is a subsidiary of the Anschutz Company. 

So what is the Anschutz Company? Basically, it’s an investment company with a wide ranging portfolio of over 100 different companies, and was set up by Phillip Anschutz. 

After some thorough research (OK, I wiki’d his name) Phillip Anschutz is a 71 year old American who co-founded the MLS and set-up or owned a lot of the teams. He also has stakes in other sports, such as basketball (LA Lakers) and ice-hockey (LA Kings), as well as owning their stadia and the O2 Arena. 

There have been rumours of a potential American investor for a little while, and Coventry City has an option to buy a stake in its multi-purpose sport and entertainment venue home, something which would surely interest a man like Phillip Anschutz…. Oh, and by the way, the last line of his wiki entry reads “Forbes ranks him the 34th richest person in the U.S. with an estimated net worth of $7 billion as of October 2010”. 

Now both of these options are at the extreme ends of the spectrum, and based solely on speculation, rumour and the wild imaginings of a man with a deeply emotional interest in Coventry City. But it suggests, one way or another, the near future may be very interesting for all Sky Blues fans.
