Coventry-Southampton : Preview

The two sides have met 114 times, and overall, Coventry City have won more matches against Southampton than they've lost! Coventry City have won 41, Southampton have won 36, with 37 matches ending in a draw (Coventry City's League record against Southampton is: W39 L34 D35).

The last time the two sides met, in the 2008/9 season, the fixture at the Ricoh ended 4-1 to Coventry City (The only time in that season Coventry City scored more than two goals in a league fixture), and will also be remembered for Elliott Ward's contender for 'Worst Penalty Ever' (Which I've still not seen!). The away fixture against Coventry City between the 1949/50 season and the 1987/88 always saw the home side take at least a point, before Southampton finally earned a victory at Highfield Road on October 20th 1987 (Which I missed due to being at a Ramones gig in London).

Team news for this fixture is that Coventry City have no width and no pace .... anyway. Hussey and Bigirimana are definitely missing, and unless Andy Thorn decides to gamble (His managerial career), Clarke and Cranie, who have returned to training, will also miss out.

Once again Coventry City are second favourites at home, and are (Best odds) 4/1 to win; Southampton are 17/20; with the draw at 14/5. Coventry City to win 2-1 is 14/1, with Southampton winning by the same score at 15/2. Southampton to win 4-0 is 42/1 and 4-1 is 40/1 (The same scores for Coventry City are as high as 250/1 and 200/1 respectively). Six Southampton players are on the 'first scorer' list (Unsurprisingly, Lambert is first at 4/1) before a Coventry City player gets a mention, with Freddie Eastwood (8/1) once again ahead of players likely to play! (Jutkiewicz is 17/2, McDonald is 9/1). CCFC old-boy Dan Fox is 25/1, while Coventry's Richard Keogh is 50/1.
