Robins Bails, Money Talks?

For supporters so used to disappointment, the departure of Mark Robins still came as a massive shock to Coventry City’s long-suffering fans.

The first question supporters were left asking was: why Huddersfield?! They are a side only three points off the relegation places in the Championship, with an inferior goal difference to the rest of the teams around them. In short, if CCFC fail to gain promotion, the two sides could be playing each other next season!

Unless their mandate has changed, they are also a club that seemingly expect instant success. Lee Clark was dismissed for not having the club on their way to winning the Champions League soon enough! They also have a similar record to CCFC regards how quickly managers come and go. The fact he is on a rolling contract suggests he won’t be there for very long….

Robins claims he left the club because he failed to get assurances from SISU. Just what sort of assurances did he expect from a club so deep in the brown stuff as CCFC are? He knew the situation when he took over, and, as decent results haven’t exactly seen a surge in attendances, and SISU still don’t own the ground, what exactly does he think has changed?

They have backed him as much as a club in our position can, allowing him to bring in some very decent players for the division we are in. Their only crime (Again, if rumours are true) is that they could not afford to treble McGoldrick’s wages, as that would mean finding another half-a-million pounds a year to do so. We haven’t got it.

Some have made the excuse (For him) that he’s moving closer to home. Absolute rubbish. He knew the distance he had to travel when he took the job, which I’m sure was made alright by receiving the sort of salary most of us could only dream of. According to reports, Huddersfield have tripled his wages – that would seem a more believable reason/excuse.

The ‘job security’ line is also garbage, as Robins has seen how much interest his five months of doing well with Coventry City has brought him. Failure to gain promotion this season could have seen him have the pick of a dozen (Supposedly) better jobs come the summer – or come the closing down of Coventry City (Which currently seems likely).

I can only presume Robins realises he won’t be taking the club to the JPT Final, having blown the home leg versus Crewe, and has seen his play-off/automatic promotion hopes severely knacked with a home defeat versus Yeovil. In short, he’s not quite the managerial genius he thought he was.

Following his ‘Sky Blue blood’ (Yawn!), ‘here for the long haul’ (Bigger yawn!) comments, followed by his jumping ship (For, let’s face it, a very average side), my guess is it will be a very long time till CCFC supporters trust anybody else. The name ‘Robins’ now rates alongside the words ‘SISU’ and ‘Coventry City Council’ for a lot of people….
