Fans turn out to remember 'King John'

Thousands of fans turned out at Elland Road this afternoon to pay respect to John Charles, one of the greatest players ever to play for Leeds United.
The memorial service began at 12.30pm when members of the family entered the stadium and took their positions in the East Stand. Slowly the hearse entered the stadium and took King John on one last lap of the green playing service, passing first in front of the East Stand, heading past the South stand before coming to rest just before the half-way line.
A short service was then held during which the gathered fans were invited to watch a short summary of King John’s great career on the big screen.
Eddie Gray took to the microphone and gave a passionate view on the life of the ‘Gentle Giant’ during which he talked of how much the club meant to Charles, despite his love affair with Juventus. The first team squad, along with other gathered representations from Johns’ life, including Wales manager, Mark Hughes, former Leeds legends including Norman Hunter, Peter Lorimer, Gordon Strachan and John Lukic. Chris Kamara, Nigel Martyn and even Sir Alex Ferguson were also present.
After a moment for quiet thoughts and prayers, the Hearse moved slowly round to complete the lap of the pitch, accompanied by family, friends and players. At this point the fans that had gathered rose to their feet to give ‘King John’ a spontaneous and affectionate round of applause that continued until the Hearse left the ground.
