Crewe 2 Leeds 2 - report

Leeds had to rely on a last minute Danny Pugh strike to get a point in a match they really should have won against Crewe on Saturday.

Crewe started the brighter, and as at Plymouth 4 days earlier, Leeds had to weather an early storm. Again though, the Whites turned things around, and by 20 minutes, were bossing the game. There were some narrow misses in the first half, non more so than when Jermaine Wright struck the inside of the post. The rebound fell to Frazer Richardson, but with the goal gaping, he got the ball stuck under his feet. He regained hois composure, dummied the keeper, but his left footed shot was headed off the line. United went into the break all square, but really should have been in front. The second half saw Crewe take an almost immediate lead. Clarke Carlisle handled in the area, and the penalty was fired home by Ashton, Leeds soon levelled though after a goalmouth scramble. The ball struck Joachim, hit the bar, and Pugh reacted quickest to head home. Leeds continued to push, and Deane, Wright and Pugh all shot wide. Crewe however looked like they were going to pinch the points, when Jones scored with 7 minutes to go, but Leeds threw everything forward. Wright went down the right flank, and squared to Pugh, who hit a screamer witht the outside of his left foot from 18 yards. It was no more than Leeds deserved, and they will be perhaps disappointed not to come away with all 3 points.
