Event Report.
Broadhall Way, home of Stevenage Borough FC was the unlikely but highly popular venue for the latest instalment of the summer league. This is becoming “the big one”, with more crowds flocking in by the week. Football’s version of the “Wacky Racers” has definitely come to town with a bang!!!
Actually, it was Dodges Battle bus that came to earth with a crash by hitting a wall outside the ground. This shake up was definitely going to fire up his troops who had performed so poorly in the earlier rounds. The Usual suspects were all out in force as Usual. Steve Bates wearing a very smart evening suit finally managed to lift his team to their first victory. When asked in the Bar afterwards what he put his teams new style of play down to, he simply replied “Carlsberg.” Of course this could be the Start of better things for the Magnificent Six, but Andy Baggott once again upstaged him with a blistering show in front of goal that saw him score the first Hat Trick of the Tournament. Such was his delight at the third of his goals that he ran off the pitch and straight into the Bar shouting “The beers are on me”, and then returned to the field of play to face his inevitable yellow card for over- celebrating!!
Kiwi Pete had little to shout about, but was quite pleased as his “FOOK OFF STAN” Hats were a sell out. Most of them were bought by Hilda for the family, but I managed to get my hands on my very own!! Zico and welsh Pete did a charity stint on the Public address system that earned them the Nicknames of “Smashy and Nicey”, whilst Matt Collins, in pin stripe suit and Cigars still managed a polite interview for Radio 5, even after his teams awful weekend. Matt will be back though. People in pin stripe suits usually are!
Lora was very pleased with her Teams emphatic maximum 6 points over the weekend, and became the darling of SKY TV as she did 6 impromptu interviews. “Well, you know, it is all in the Tactics” she told Andy Gray. “A lot of skill is involved in this and all my hard work and drinking has paid off”!!
Rob Hulse looked electrifying as the Best of Whites totally tore up the form book, leaving Manc Azza and Aussie white totally stunned in their wake. Azza and SA however had little time to reflect on their team’s poor weekend, as over 500 groupies, screaming like a Beatles concert surrounded them at the end. Shirt sales had gone well this weekend, and not surprisingly, the new “Azza and SA in da bungalow” shirts were all sold out by kick off. As the matches unfolded I took a look around the merchandising tents outside the ground. “Wocko is Cool” tee shirts were selling well, as was the Steve Bates designer Sunglasses range. “Quality gear for a fiver” said the label.
Hats, pin badges and all kinds of paraphernalia were on display. I managed to make a few modest purchases before moving back onto the pitch. Stan and Hilda, both dismayed by earlier performances had a lot to be encouraged about this weekend, and Hilda almost kept the rolling pin out of sight for the whole weekend, apart from one isolated incident when she hit LA with it. “Because I can” she told our startled Los Angeles Ex pat.
Wocko sat in the bar area for most of today, as his team went first, and he was quietly pleased with his sides steady and consistent progress. Poor Milsner and SA were left to rue a series of chances gone begging that has left them in a parlous state. Greg was happier with his team’s performance, but his side must keep up this progress if they are to sustain a challenge for the top half of the table. Biggest climbers were Lora and Andy Baggott, who delighted the fans by singing “the only way is up” over the Tannoy.
Another superb weekend and my thanks to all the staff of Stevenage Borough FC for their tireless work. As the tents were taken down, and the piles of beer cans, crisp and pie wrappers (mine) were cleared away again, I was left to wonder over a great weekend, and to reflect on the match of the round.
Mighty Whites 2 Best of Whites 3
As the cheers died down, a hush came over the expectant fans. Lora led her team onto the pitch, clutching a can of Carlsberg. Azza, looking nervous led his team out, only to be surrounded by ball girls asking for his autograph. There was a slight delay as stewards had to physically drag these screaming teenagers off the pitch. Collina blew the whistle, and the game began.
Lennon and Hulse combined well in the opening stages for Best of whites, and a fizzing low shot from Hulse produced a fine save from Martyn. Martyn despatched the ball to Bremner on the half way line who played infield to Radebe. Radebe pushed the ball through the legs of lorimer 1 and on to Allan Clarke who drove a low shot into the bottom corner of the net past a despairing Sullivan. Azza, on his feet, barely able to contain his delight was then cautioned by Collina for poking his tongue out at Lora. When Collina was not looking however, he threw a custard pie and got out his super soaker. An incensed Lora complained to Collina who told her to sit down and pace herself with her drinking.
Instantly from the restart, Charles went on a legendary run, rolling back the years, and rounding Hulse Lennon and then Sullivan to make it two-nil to the Mighty Whites. Azza, now beside himself asked a couple of stewards to “prepare the gunge tank” for Lora. This was however to be his last laugh.
As the second half commenced, there was grit and determination about the Best of Whites probably fuelled by Lora’s “Let’s be having you! We need a seventh man here” speech to the crowd. Hulse and Lennon were proving too much for Radebe and Bremner, in spite of several hard challenges. At the three quarter point, all hell broke loose, as Martyn rolled the ball out to Bremner, but Hulse nipped in first, squared the ball to Lennon who side footed past the stranded Martyn.
Mighty Whites went close again from the restart, with Charles and Lorimer hitting the post in succession. There was desperation about Best of Whites defending, but a clearance out of defence found Rob Hulse unmarked on the halfway line. His first time effort left Martyn with no chance as the ball screamed into the net from 15 yards. Lora was now out on the touchline, fridge abandoned as she saw the chance for the Kill. With seconds remaining, Bremner fouled Hulse on the Half way line. Lennon took the free kick in a flash and wrong footed Radebe who could only watch as Hulse sped in on Martyn. As Martyn dived at his feet, Hulse held the ball up and chipped the ball into the empty net for 3-2. The crowd were delirious, not having seen a fight back of such epic proportions since Istanbul last Wednesday. Lora, ran the length of the pitch at the final whistle to thank Rob Hulse, who took off in the other direction, but she cornered him finally in the Bar area.
Azza, was left speechless, and with a full gunge tank!
Definitely the game of the round, and it saw Lora’s Best of Whites make impressive strides up the Table.
Next Week, the Tournament moves to The Pilot Field, Home of Hastings United FC. As the pressure mounts at both ends of the Table, this will be a crucial point in the summer season.
See you all there………..
