Leeds will rebuild - planning starts now

Ken Bates and Kevin Blackwell must now start on Plan B, with Plan a up the swanny with the failure to secure promotion to the Premiership. Both had stated that there was a plan in place for either outcome, and Blackwell must now build a team that can get us out of this division.

First, he has to get rid of the dead wood – and there is plenty. Most under threat are Einarsson, Ricketts, Pugh, Moore and Wright – I would be surprised to see any of these at Elland Road next year. Of the borderline group are Crainey or Harding, Lewis, at least one of the strikers, Griffiths and Bakke.

To be honest, non of the above would be any great loss, as long as they can be replaced by quality. We have been crying out for a creative midfielder for 2 years, and this needs to be the first problem addresses. Liam Miller flattered to deceive. Although he showed glimpses of his quality, he never stamped his authority on the game, and it’s hard to see him playing for a top 3 side in Man Utd as he is hoping for. Jonathon Douglas huffed and puffed, but lacks that bit of quality that’s needed.

A natural right winger is next on the list – again, a position we have struggled with for a while.

Finally, we need another striker. A 20 goals a season man – with Ricketts and Moore likely to leave, and possibly Healy – a top striker is a must.

The other thing lacking from the team is pace – we must be one of the slowest in the league. A pacy winger or striker would give us another dimension, and give Blackwell options.

The manager needs to get us challenging right at the top of the table – a play off position isn’t good enough. Bates will give him time, but if we’re not top 2 or 3 by Christmas, don’t be surprised to see a new man at the helm.
