Tonights Worthington Cup results for our Nationwide League Division One teams , Aston Villa 5 Preston 0 , Blackburn 4 Rotherham 0 , Liverpool 1 Ipswich 1 (Liverpool win 5-4 on pens)

Aston Villa 5 Preston 0

Aston Villa stormed into the quarter finals of the Worthington Cup by demolishing First Division Preston , Daruis Vasell was the hero of the night grabbing two goals the first before half time.

He grabbed a second just after the break as well , the scoring didn't end there 3 goals in the last ten minutes from Dublin (80) Angel (84) and leave the best till last Thomas Hitzlsperger hit a 30 yard screamer on (87).

Preston were never in the game and they never got Villa keeper Peter Enklemen's hands dirty all night.

Blackburn 4 Rotherham 0

Rotherham limped away from there little battle of the roses tie with Blackburn being beaten easily 4-0 , Cole and Yorke did start the game surprisingly and both were on the score sheet.

Two quick goals by the talented front pair Yorke (12) , Cole (16) really ended the tie very quickly.

Rotherham were never at the races and were dead and buried before half time further goals from Yorke who grabbed his second on (39) and Damien Duff on (43) had the home fans dreaming of another cup sucess this season.


Liverpool 1 Ipswich 1 (Liverpool win 5-4 on pens)

Liverpool were taken all the way to a penalty shootout tonight by plucky Ipswich Town but the class shone as Liverpool won the game with the deciding kick being converted by El Hadji Diouf.

It was a very even game all night and both teams passed the ball around to good effect , Ipswich shocked the Anfield Road fans by taking the lead from Tommy Miller on 14 minutes.

Liverpool equalised from a El Hadji Diouf penalty on 54 minutes , Mark Venus sent Neil Mellor to the deck after the striker was clean through.

So it went into extra time and both teams cancelled each other out in that period, so the dreaded penaltys came into commission and the deciding moment of the spot kicks was when Jamie Clapham saw his shot hit the bar , every other spot kick was scored and Liverpool went through.
