Barnsley were today relegated following a 2-0 home defeat to Norwich City. A late Crewe fightback saw them hanging on by a whisker.

Barnsley down

A goal each by David Nielsen and Paul McVeigh sent the Tykes crashing to Division 2. Nielsen missed a penalty just before scoring. Bruce Dyer almost scored for Barnsley.

A late fightback from Crewe saw them draw 2-2 with Notts Forest to leave them hanging on, just. Goals from Rodney Jack and Rob Hulse canceled out the earlier efforts from Eugen Bopp and Matthieu Louis-Jean.

With Rotherham drawing and Sheff Wednesday losing Crewe are 3 points behind both and have to play Rotherham next Sunday. However both have a far superior goal difference to Crewe. Crewe would need to win by 20 goals to against Rotherham to overtake them. Sheff Wednesday have a superior goal difference of 9 and must face Wolves. A 5-0 defeat against Wolves and a 5-0 Crewe win would mean Wednesday go down instead of Crewe. Chances are slim but anythings possible in football.

Grimsby and Walsall secured their first division places with good wins over Burnley and Sheff Utd respectively.
