Could Romario be playing 1st Division football?

Brazilian legend Romario could be playing his trade in the 1st Division next season if Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has his way.

Redknapp is understood to be preparing a 1-year-contract for the 36-year-old after the striker refused terms at Premiership Birmingham City.

Romario is regarded as one of the great strikers of this age and was a key part of the Brazilian 1994 World Cup winning team, such is his fame back home that fans were disguisted that he was left out of the 2002 World Cup squad.

Ronaldo is currently contracted to Brazilain side Flamenco but is available on a free transfer. If Redknapp was to complete the senstational signing it would eclipse last seasons signing of Robert Prosenecki, who has now left the club.

Redknapp has already attempted to sign David Ginola, a deal which appears to have fallen through as chairman Milan Mandaric is not prepared to pay Ginola's wages. Whilst Romario would command a high wage the return from commercial ventures and boosted crowds would be even greater.

Redknapp gave a brief statement on the situation. "If I can pull of this signing it will be sensational for Portsmouth."
