Referee Eddie Wolstenhome had no choice to call off the match as Sheff Utd were reduced to 6 men. Simon Tracy, George Santos and Patrick Suffo saw red whilst Michael Brown and Robert Ullathorne went off injured. The FA and the Football League will meet on Thursday to decide whether the result should stand or if the game is to be replayed.

Elsewhere Wolves' title hopes all but disapeared as a battling display by Grimsby earned them a valuable 3 points in their efforts to fight off relegation. Andy Todd got the only goal with 8 minutes to go, Wolves full-back Kevin Muscat was sent off following an elbow on Michael Boulding minutes after half-time, Wolves boss, Dave Jones, branded the Aussie 'stupid'.

This meant that the title was all but handed on a plate to Man City who defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 thanks to a Kevin Horlock goal. The win sends City 5 points clear of Wolves with a game in hand.

Crewe fought for a point against Portsmouth after Peter Crouch opened the scoring for Pompy, Rob Hulse replied for Dario Gradi's men.

Milwall debutant Stephen McPhail had the worst possible debut. The midfield playmaker loaned from Leeds was given his marching orders after a reckless tackle on David Burrows. That sending off cost Milwall as they went down 2-1 to Sheff Wed thanks to a 2 minute brace from Simon Donnelly, Sean Dyche grabbed the consilation goal for the Lions.

Rotherham snatched a late minute equaliser in the Yorkshire derby against Bradford. Former Miller Wayne Jacobs put the Bantams in the lead but Alan Lee struck from the spot to steady Rotherhams relegation troubles. The draw did neither team any favours.

Walsall won the big relegation derby of the day against Barnsley. The Tykes drew first blood threw Bruce Dyer but a spirited second half display resulted in goals from Darren Byfield and Don Goodman. The result moved Walsall up a place to 22nd but Barnsley dropped two places to 23rd.

Coventry suffered a strong deafeat at the hands of Watford to stutter their play-off bandwagon. Free scoring defender Wayne Brown struck twice and Marcus Gayle grabbed the other as the inconsistent Hornets ran out 3-0 winners.

Stockport were officaly releagted to Divison 2 after a 3-1 defeat at Wimbledon. David Connolly grabbed two and Neil Ardley got the other. Jon Daly grabbed the consilation goal for County.

In the big derby game played on Sunday Burnley ran out 2-1 winners over their fierce rivals Preston, 2-1. Ian Moore and David Johnson scored for the Clarets whilst Iain Anderson pulled a late goal back for Preston. Paul Gascoigne was introduced to the Turf Moor faithful before the game.
