Preston grab Broomes from Burnley's grasp

Preston have signed defender Marlon Broomes underneath the nose of fierce rivals Burnley.

The 24-year-old has spent most of the pre-season training with Burnley and it was thought that the club wanted to offer him a deal but couldn't due to financial constraints.

Preston have money available from the Sean Gregan transfer and swooped in for the former England U-21 star.

Broomes has already caused a stir in Division One when he rejected Grimsby's offer and joined relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday, having spent 3-months on loan with the Mariners from Blackburn.

Broomes' contract with the The Owls ran out in June and Blackpool were another team linked with the centre-back.

Speaking to Preston's official site Broomes revealed why he opted for Preston. "I've known that Preston were interested in me for quite a few weeks now and I met up with Craig Brown last week.

"I liked what he had to say. He's a top manager. He said good things to me and I was impressed."
