Dragons fall to the Spireites

Goals from defensive duo Steve Blatherwick and Ian Evatt increased Chesterfield's hopes of avoiding relegation with a 2-1 home win.

The home side's committed display exposed weaknesses in the shaky Wrexham defence and dented their promotion bid.

The Red Dragons cracked in the 70th minutes when Blatherwick looped a header over goalkeeper Andy Dibble.

Although Wrexham substitute Chris Armstrong equalised quickly, Evatt struck late to win it for Chesterfield to the dispair of the Wrexham faithful.

After Blatherwick broke the deadlock, Chris Armstrong grabbed his first league goal for the Dragons when he pounced on a rebound.

But the Spireites had the last laugh when Wrexham were caught out by a right-wing cross, allowing new loan signing Jamie McMaster to set up Evatt to drive a right-foot shot past Dibble from 12 yards.

It wasn't the most exciting game you will ever see but the three points were pricless for Chesterfield, but Wrexhams defeat against Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday continued to this week with now two straight defeats after 3 successive victories against Peterbrough, Stockport and Blackpool, with Notts County the Racecourse's visitors in a week, Denis Smith will accept nothing but a win to make up for the performance at Saltergate.
