Carlos happy at Wrexham

Carlos Edwards reveals how he has to bite bullets while starring for Wrexham.

Carlos, 25, is being continually linked with big clubs even though he is contracted at Wrexham until the end of next season.

Wigan Athletic and Rotherham just two sides to mention.

He said to the Evening Leader: “I know there’s been a lot of talk about clubs being interested in me and obviously one day I’d like to play at the highest level.

“But it does get to me sometimes, especially when the stories go a bit overboard. That can be a bit off-putting at times.

“I’ve always found the gaffer very fair and open and he assures me he’s had no contact from any club. My agent tells me the same so I just try and get on with concentrating on playing football for Wrexham. I’m very happy here. The people are nice and the fans here have been very supportive of me and the other lads.”

Edwards, along with Dennis Lawrence and Hector Sam, a Trinidadian and Tobago international, played a key role last season as Wrexham won automatic promotion from the third division to the second division.

 “I enjoyed that,” he said. “The fans certainly did and if we could get into the play-offs this time, I’m, sure everyone would enjoy a big day out at the Millennium Stadium. The rest of the lads feel the same but, to be fair, they don’t talk about promotion much in training.
 

“Yet, I believe, the vibes you get around the place there is a feeling we could make it into the play-offs. There’s enough ability at the club to achieve that. I’ve still got a few ambitions I’d like to fulfil in football.
“One is, I’d love to get to the World Cup qualifiers with Trinidad. We only missed out by a point in 1990 and one day I’d love to qualify with my country.

“Also, I think everyone in football ultimately wants to play at the highest level they can and I’m no different.

The English Premiership is renowned for being one of the best - and hardest - in the world. But, as I say, at the moment I’m happy here trying to progress with Wrexham.

“I’ve certainly changed my life style since coming out of the army, where I was a soldier 24 hours a day, to play professional football. I left college in 1997 and joined the army and started playing football for a team called Queen’s Park Cricket Club!

“They had a football team as well and when I went into the army I started playing for Defence Force.

 
“I did the full five months’ training and although the army gives you a lot of security in a place like Trinidad, I’ve never regretted leaving to come and play football over here.”

Edwards signed on the dotted line for Wrexham in a reported £125,000 from Defence Force in August 2000. Centre-back Dennis Lawrence also came in from the same source with striker Hector Sam signing from San Juan Jabloteh.

Edwards looks like one of the leaders of the pack for Wrexham’s player of the season. Lawrence, once regarded as a joke defender, has since silenced critics and the mercurial Sam has proved he can get goals, most recently being at TNS in the FAW Premier Cup.
