Answering the critics

Denis Smith's side were booed off after another Racecourse disappointment as relegation-threatened Stockport County got a point in a subdued 0-0 draw.
 

But Smith is sticking to his guns, speaking to The Evening Leader: “There is still a long way to go in this campaign and we aim to be in there fighting all the way.”

 
Smith, however, heard the good and bad of Wrexham fans on Saturday. He was applauded by dining match sponsors for his pre-match speech - and booed as Wrexham failed to win at home again.

Stockport frustrated Wrexham whose two previous home games ended in defeat by Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday who are also in danger of the drop to division three.

Smith and his assistant, Kevin Russell, are confused by their side’s poor home form having won eight away.

Smith said: “Teams are not going to come here and try to play us at football because it could cost them dear. But, for the sake of the fans, I dearly want us to improve our home form. But at least we didn’t lose and there was another clean sheet for Andy Dibble, his 11th in the league this season.”
 

Wrexham captain Darren Ferguson played with a fractured hand. Physio Mel Pejic said: “Daz fractured a bone in his hand during training but wanted to play. We put a support bandage on it to get him through, but there’s no way he wanted to miss the game. The only casualty from Saturday was Chris Llewellyn who got a kick on the ankle but it’s nothing serious.”
