Darlington looked the better side on the day and should have gone ahead early on, when striker Barry Conlon scooped a half-volley over the bar from eight yards.

Macclesfield were desperately unlucky when John Parkin, still looking for his first goal for the club, nailed a close-range header against the post just before half-time.

Darlington went ahead through Craig Russell in the 53rd minute when a shot from Matt Clarke fell to the youngster, who blitzed a volley over the head of Town keeper Steve Wilson from 15 yards out.

I watched the game from the Darlington terrace, and was appauled by Macclesfield's atmosphere! The home fans were quiet for the whole 90 minutes, even at 0-0.
