Middlesbrough star reveals anger at McClaren

Middlesbrough and England winger Stewart Downing has revealed his anger at being dropped by England and former Boro coach Steve McClaren after the 0-0 draw at home against Macedonia earlier this month.

McClaren left Downing out of the side for the qualifier against Croatia four days later as he reverted to a 3-5-2 formation, with Ashley Cole selected at left wing-back, it did not help much though, England lost 2-0 to Croatia.

"I knew we were going to get criticism after the Macedonia game because we didn't win," Downing told the News of the World. "But I thought it was a bit harsh when just two players were singled out - Wayne Rooney and myself."

"But it's a team game and for me Ledley King was the only player who stood out."

"That was why I was disappointed when I was left out for Croatia," he added.

"I explained to the manager that I wasn't happy and that if I was to be dropped other players should be as well."

The 22-year-old also fired a broadside at the former Middlesbrough manager, insisting that new boss Gareth Southgate has helped turn the Teesside club's fortunes around.

"He's brought in some great ideas," enthused Downing. "He thought changes were needed and he's been proved right."

"He said we were not fit enough as a team and we need more competition for places. He said we had to push for a UEFA Cup spot and I think that should be our aim."
