Elfsborg close to winning the title

The Swedish Premier Division, Allsvenskan, season approaches its final moments and the title is still up for grabs for two rather unexpected sides: Elfsborg and AIK, with the two sides only one point apart before the final round.

Formerly a massive force in the Swedish football, AIK suffered a relegation to the first division in 2004 only to bounce back and immediately join the hunt fo the title on their first season up again. With prolific Brazilian striker Wilton Figueiredo leading the line with 10 goals, AIK have been scoring for fun throughout the season. Meanwhile Elfsborg have the meanest defence of the league and a creative midfield orchestrated by former Southampton player Anders Svensson.

Elfsborg did themselves no favours by drawing their match against Helsingborg on Sunday, but got away with it after AIK couldn't break the deadlock against GAIS the following day. Thus Elfsborg maintain their one-point advantage come the final round next Sunday, when both sides face a difficult task, when Malmö visit AIK in Stockholm and Djurgården make the trip to Borås to face Elfsborg.

Should Elfsborg win the title, it would be their first since 1961. 10-time winners AIK meanwhile celebrated their last title in 1998.
