A Geordie Guide to Addictions

A Geordie Guide to Addictions As A life long Newcastle United fan and a dedicated smoker, I somehow managed to pick Wednesday as the day to give up smoking.

First I have to admit to a bit of a temper problem, I tried giving up smoking about 5 years ago, I punched the bloke across the road and had a massive argument with my wife, and frankly I only stopped smoking for about an hour.

So Wednesday, I was feeling quite happy about myself, I had not smoked all day, and I hadn’t hit anyone (well I had shouted at some Jehovah witnesses, but frankly they deserved it).

Then comes kick off, because of work it was to be my first match of the year, and frankly it was bloody freezing, so a couple of shorts, and a joint (I am reliably informed cannabis is not really smoking) seemed the order of the day, I was feeling confident, I mean the Slow talking bastards that populate the brummie heartland were lucky to get a replay, so we would trounce them at St James, surely?

Kick off still feeling Ok without a tab, although I have had another joint (remember its not really smoking) 1-0 down, starting to want a tab really badly, 2-0 down (why isn’t alcohol available on the NHS) 2-1 feeling slightly better, now don’t want to kill the person in the row behind me.

3-1 again want to kill the person in the row behind me, 4-1 need cigarette badly, or person behind me about to die.

5-1 had cigarette borrowed off person behind me, now best mate.

This is the thing about following Newcastle I have had a lot of experience and frankly I need my addictions to cope, because just when you think there is light at the end of the tunnel, you usually realise it’s a oncoming truck.
