A 7 goal thriller, saw Inter go through to the quater finals. After a shaky start Inter took hold of the game, but were still hanging on at the end due to a late charge by Benfica.

Benfica took the lead in the 36th minute, when Tiago played in Nuno Gomes, who fired in a beatiful shot from the edge of the area.

Obafemi Martins, who had already had one goal ruled out for a Veiri foul, equalised with a tap in after som good work from Karagounis.

Then Inter started to take control, scoring twice after the break with Recoba and Veiri doind the houners. safe and sound 3-1.
Inter grew in confidence after the break and it was no surprise when they netted twice in four minutes to move 3-1 ahead.

Well you woul think so, but the San Siro was not to be allowed the luxury of a 2 goal lead for long, Sabrosa, flew down the left before releasing a pass that gomes finished.

Martins thought he had put the game beyond Benfica when he made it 4-2 following a supberb cross from Recoba.

But Benfica do not give up, and it was too their credit that 77 minutes into the game Benfica scored to make it 4-3, with a low shot from Tiago.

These were nervous times for Inter, knowing that if Benfica scored again they would go out on the away goals rule.

But to their credit, Inter held on and now have a trip to France to look forward to.
