Steven Gerrard will be used to tempt Real Madrid into releasing Fernando Morientes and bringing the Spanish star to Anfield. Gerrard has been dropping guarded hints that he thought his future lay away from Merseyside in the last few weeks.

But few expected him to leave before the end of the season. But with Real Madrid turning down an offer for Morientes from Liverpool yesterday, they are expected to return with an improved bid in the next few days.

The rumours in Spain are that bid will include Gerrard.
