Luxemburgo replaces Mariano Garcia Remon at the Bernabeu after a disappointing three-month spell in charge. Real have fallen 13 points behind Barcelona in La Liga under Garcia Remon and their performances have come under attack from disillusioned fans

Garcia Remon is set to stay at the club in some capacity after stepping into the helm in September following Jose Antonio Camacho's departure.

Luxemburgo has a wealth of experience after coaching the Brazilian national team and a number of top Brazilian club sides.

He has won the Brazilian championship a record five times with four different clubs and helped Santos to win this season's title.

"Real Madrid's board has unanimously approved the proposal of the sports management team to appoint Wanderley Luxemburgo as new coach," said Real vice-president Emilio Butragueno.

"It's not been an easy decision for us but we think it is the best decision right now for Real Madrid."

Luxemburgo is Real's third new coach of the season and he will work alongside new sporting director Arrigo Sacchi at Real as they look to improve their fortunes in the second half of the season.
