Milan pair back decision to halt Serie A

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti and team manager Silvano Ramaccioni spoke of their agreement with the decision by CONI to suspend this weekends football, in respect of the Holy Father’s condition.

Carlo Ancelotti stated to Milan TV:

'I think it was the right thing. There is apprehension over whole of the world, not just for Catholics. It is right for the sporting world to show respect for a person who has tried to make the world a better place. It’s a testing decision that shows that football can confront problems in a sensitive way. The Pope is an important figure worldwide and in particular, in Italy. For this generation, for the players and me Pope John Paul II is the only Pope we have had, it’s a time to great reflection. The pontiff has done a lot and has made some grand decisions but has stayed close to the youth. He is a Pope who has shown great personality and character.'

While Silvano Ramaccioni remembered meeting the pope in happier circumstances:

'I remember twenty years ago when Milan went to Rome for a private meeting with John Paul II. I will always remember it. It was special to meet someone of such stature. It had a great effect and we hope we can repeat it.'
