Pontypridd 41- 14 Bees

Good trip down to Ponty - apart from the M5 - no problem if you go via the M50. Only place in the country with sun, it would seem - and thus made for running rugby. Good crowd, not bad for a pre-season “friendly” and fantastic to see so many Bees supporters who made it to Wales. Good to see the lads in action again - but the result had an familiar air about it - we score a try in the first 5 minutes (before I arrived) and then we commit hari-kari with some awful decision making, woeful ball supply and very poor passing. The scrum were superb, and there were quite a few flashes of "what could have been". Our scrum half needs protecting - there should be no way 6 large opposition players can land on him without any of our players anywhere near. Rob Conelly - fantastic commitment to the last minute, Adam Clayton - monster tackling - everybody else really did try - first up tackling better than I have seen for quite a while - but the passes to no one let us down badly and led to several soft tries. Certainly not as bad a start as last season - at least the players seemed to know where they were going wrong. Still, a lot for Rusty (with flash new sling) Eugene and Kempy to work on - we did tire in the last 20. Good day out and not such a disaster as the score would suggest. remember - we did have some players out - Hunty for one, who had been playing for Northampton 7's at Bath. Good luck for next week - pity we could not have had a friendly at home to christen the new facilities!
