The Latics' promotion from Division Two was confirmed when Crewe failed to beat Bristol City.

And that meant a £100,000 windfall for United as it triggered a clause in the contract of Canada international defender Jason de Vos.

The centre-back left Tannadice for the JJB Stadium in July 2001 in a deal initially worth £400,000.

United spokesman Malcolm Brown said: "A note of congratulation has been sent down from us as well as an invoice for £100,000 plus VAT.

"We are obviously delighted that they have got promotion as these are difficult times for Scottish football."
