Dundee United have signed striker Allan Smart from Oldham on a free transfer.

Manager Alex Smith revealed he has been chasing the striker for some time and had once been quoted £1million for the 27-year-old when Smart was at Watford.

"We are delighted to eventually obtain Allan's signature. I have been interested in him for over a year," Smith told the club's official website.

"I watched him at Watford one evening when he scored four goals - at that time Watford asked over £1million for him.

"His scoring record is approximately one goal in every two matches at every club he has played for.

I am sure he will add to the striking power of our squad and compliment our other front men Steven Thompson and Derek Lilley."

Perth-born Smart counts Brechin and Inverness Caledonian Thistle among his other former clubs and also had a brief loan spell at Hibernian last season.

The Tannadice move represents a fresh start for Smart, who saw his Oldham contract terminated following an off-field incident that led to a court appearance.
