They intend to leave Scotland's top division in two years and create another set-up under new rules either with or without Celtic and Rangers.

It had been threatened for a while following the emergence of major differences between the Old Firm and the rest of the league which centred initially on the prospect of a new television deal and eventually broke down over proposals to change the league's voting structure.

The 10 had wanted the Old Firm to scrap the existing 11-1 majority in favour of 8-4 but the Glasgow duo would not agree.

SPL secretary Iain Blair said: "I can confirm that we have received the resignations of the 10 clubs at 3pm."
