Conditions at Camborne were dry, but a strong South Westerly made things difficult for both sides, however within 2 minutes of the start Alberto Di Bernardo took an early penalty chance from half way to put the Pirates ahead.

Despite conditions the Blues tried to play an expansive game and their efforts were rewarded with a drop goal on 17mins from fly half Tim Walsh, an Aussie 7s player.

However the Pirates replied almost immediately with a try from inspirational skipper, Gavin Cattle, which was converted by Di Bernardo.

On 25 minutes, Newbury Skipper Gregor Hayter was yellow carded & the Pirates pack took quick advantage, driving as one from 15m to the line for Villi Ma’asi to score with Di Bernardo once again converting.

The Pirates players were surprised by the referee’s decision not to hand out another yellow card, soon after, for a blatant professional foul, but still went further ahead before the break with a penalty try again converted by Alberto.

From the restart Newbury looked lively again and on 48 minutes Walsh was at last successful with one of his penalty attempts.

Pirates seemed to lack some of the pep from the first half, but a second burst from man of the match Cornishman Sam Heard lifted the crowd. The Pirates pack were working well & on 66mins set-up the position for Welsh Wizard Rhodri MaCatee to scamper over for an unconverted try on the right to make it 29-6.

A rare lapse in the Pirates defence left a gap for Newbury centre Mark Ireland to race to the posts for a try that Walsh couldn’t fail to convert. This stung the Pirates back into action that saw flanker Stan McKeen finish off a good afternoon’s work in difficult conditions to finish 34-13.

Whilst the majority of Pirates fans were well satisfied with the performance, which Jim Mckay conceded was an “Ugly Win”, some of the more miserable amongst us showed their lack of manners and appreciation by berating Jim & Adrian in the clubhouse.

In spite of negative comments from Newbury reported in the press, this was a game played in good spirit & followed by good humour in the clubhouse.

Definitely family entertainment
